A Publisher and a Writer make a Podcast.

The Publisher and the Writer Podcast

Jane Curry, founder of Ventura Press, one of Sydney’s leading independent publishers, has joined forces with best-selling author Seana Smith to produce a podcast aimed at aspiring writers to help them understand the book business from the inside.

The Publisher and The Writer is the result. A ten-episode podcast series will be released on Monday 26th August via Spotify and Apple with the aim of demystifying the publishing industry for outsiders.

Understand the Publishing industry

We explain all aspects of the book industry with content that covers:

·      A who’s who of publishers, from large multi-nationals to small indies.

·      How do I avoid / escape the slush pile?

·      What’s an advance against royalties?

·      What does ‘sale or return’ mean and why does it exist?

·      What is the ‘sell-in’ and the ‘sell-through’

·      What is genre fiction and why is it so important to the book business?

·      What does an editor do?

·      What are the best writing groups?

·      What happens at the Frankfurt Book Fair?

·      Who is the biggest bookseller in Australia?

And why now might be the very best time to self-publish your book and get scooped up by a trade publisher afterwards.

Born out of Jane’s long experience in publishing, both in the UK and Australia, and Edinburgh born Seana’s 35-year career as a writer, it was clear that much of the book industry remains a mystery to the outside world and is often not completely understood by authors on the inside.

The publishing world has for too long been the preserve of the privileged few.

Both hosts feel strongly that the publishing world has for too long been the preserve of the privileged few and that this podcast will demystify the process for all and answer many questions.

Further series are planned which will include guest appearances from publishers, writers, agents and booksellers.
